Pattaya City Expats Club – Home
We will be welcoming back Professor Andy Barraclough. Many of you will know Prof. Andy from his previous medically related presentations to the club on TB, Dengue Fever, and Covid, Covid and Covid and more recently Monkey Pox. He is the Professor of Public Health and Director of Training at the Empower School of Health – a World Health Organization cooperating center. He is one of the co- authors of the ‘Yellow Book’, Managing Drug Supplies by MSH and WHO, and the e-Handbook of Health Systems in Action. He has over 30 years of experience of working in low- and middle-income countries – mainly in SE Asia. The main focus of previous experience includes effective management of pharmaceuticals, vaccines and medical commodities, and especially the implementation of programs for the introduction of new medicines and rapid diagnostics for Neglected Tropical Diseases. He has presented on Rational Use of Medicines (RUM) and Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) at many conferences, seminars and webinars in the SE Asia region, and has authored the RUM and AMR training courses for the Empower School of Health Master’s Degree Course, and served as technical advisor to the Asia Pacific Leaders Malaria Alliance (APLMA).

Most recently, he has authored the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) Medical Supply Chains for Emergency Response to Covid-19, and pandemic preparedness training modules and presented at a series of webinars on RUM and AMR in the era of Covid-19. His upcoming talk will be on The Unending Human Battle with the Microscopic World. A myth given modern credence by the apparently rapid development of the Covid vaccines and anti-viral treatments. Regrettably, the reality of the battle with microbes is rather different and involves far less technology and far more mundane and basic management and medical practices. Traditionally, the battle between Human Health and the Microbial World has been depicted as a race of the ingenuity of man applying the ‘white heat of a technological revolution’ against the mutation and rapid adaption of microbes. Prof. Andy seeks to explain that, despite the hype of hi-tech medicines, the battle is more akin a situation where humans are still trying to use the equivalent of bows and arrows, against an ever-evolving army of billions upon billions; and that the current approach of just constantly inventing improved types of arrows is not going to be enough to win. Can this be true? It needs a complete Global battlefield strategy, and perhaps surprisingly, one that involves in large measure, equality, and humanity, together with a back to basics of serious management and organization, and fundamental medical practices. Well, if you only look at Global Health Figures and Disease and Mortality Trends it’s easy to believe that the Human battle with microbes is already won. Overall, communicable diseases are on the decline worldwide – so what’s the problem? Come to the meeting to see Prof. Andy explain why such Global averaged figures can be highly misleading, and why for the majority of this audience i.e., those over 60 and residing in South East Asia, the health situation is very different from the global average; and how some Neglected Tropical Diseases – such as Dengue and TB- are increasing, in older people.
